Martin Katz

Martin I. Katz

In Memoriam

A true pioneer in the corporate renewal industry, Martin “Marty” I. Katz founded ESBA in 1978 to serve as a strategic sounding board for struggling companies. Over the next 35 years, he led hundreds of turnarounds and restructuring engagements, changing the trajectories of many businesses. His pioneering effort spanned a broad array of industries, and he played a pivotal role in the success of numerous high-profile turnaround ventures.

Under Marty’s leadership and stewardship, ESBA saved more than 50,000 jobs and added billions of dollars of value that would otherwise have been lost across domestic and international economies.

The TMA Connection

Marty played a key role in establishing the TMA, mentoring many of the early industry leaders, and making a major impact on the organization’s and the corporate restructuring industry’s growth as it helped shape leading firms throughout the sector. In his local community, Marty also made a positive impact, serving on several boards and volunteering with nonprofit organizations, always with an eye toward improving others’ lives. In 2018, Marty was bestowed TMA’s highest honor being elected to its Hall of Fame.

Marty’s Vision

One of the foremost authorities on business development, Marty always considered his stewardship of the corporate renewal industry to be of the utmost importance. Known for bringing stability and credibility to chaotic situations, he brought integrity, knowledge, compassion, and leadership to every engagement. His vision, mentoring, leadership, and training served as the foundation for many others in the industry, who have eventually gone on to follow in his footsteps and carry on his legacy, reflecting his work ethic.

Retirement from ESBA

Even after stepping down from the ESBA leadership team in 2013, Marty remained active in the turnaround industry, serving as a director and providing board advisory services. He spent the latter part of his life as an unofficial sounding board for other businesses while enjoying time with his wife, Billie, his children, and his grandchildren.
